Peterbilt returned to the 2019 Equity and Diversity Conference as our first-ever Corporate-Collegiate Partnership Sponsor! A joint effort with the College of Business and College of Engineering, this event included a panel discussion from 6:00-7:00 pm in Union 333 A-B bringing together representatives from Peterbilt’s Diversity and Inclusion Council, PBWIN (Women’s Employee Resource Group), PB Veterans Group, and Colleges of Engineering and Business. The event also provided opportunities for registrants to network with Peterbilt’s executives and human resources immediately before and after the panel.

Topics included the role and importance of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and other diversity and inclusion efforts in the corporate setting, strategies for inclusive talent acquisition and talent management, and creating career pipelines for students through the stellar curricular and outreach efforts in the Colleges of Business and Engineering. This event was open to UNT Students, employees, alumni, and the general public. Registration for the E&D Conference was not required to attend this event.

Peterbilt Celebrates Diverse Work Culture

Peterbilt established three inclusive, diversity-focused organizations within its walls: the Diversity Council, the Peterbilt Women’s Initiative (PBWIN) Diversity Resource Group and the Veterans’ Diversity Resource Group.

Inclusion progresses the concept of diversity into action through an environment of involvement, respect and connection; where ideas, backgrounds and perspectives are harnessed to create business standards. Peterbilt realizes that both diversity and inclusion are imperative to success.

Peterbilt’s objective is to ensure highly-qualified and effective people are available to conduct our business today and in the future. These are individuals with global expertise who possess the ability to drive innovation, identify new markets and collaborate in a team approach. This requires a diverse pool of potential leaders at Peterbilt.

In alignment with the PACCAR Diversity charter, the organization’s areas of focus are Train, Outreach, Develop, and Champion – all of which are concentrated on solving business problems with diversity elements. The organization sponsored the University of North Texas’ Building Bridges for Inclusion conference and hosted a segment focused on “What We Think About When We Think About Race” segment in 2018. The organization was also a sponsor of the Denton Black Film Festival in February as well as many other initiatives fostering Diversity.

Under the Diversity Council, Peterbilt has two diversity resource groups to date: the Peterbilt Women’s Initiative (PBWIN) and the Veterans’ organization. PBWIN currently has more than 100 members within their organization who are dedicated to championing the empowerment of women at Peterbilt through education, support, networking, personal growth and development opportunities.

In 2018 alone, this organization has featured guest speaker Joann Lublin, retired management news editor for The Wall Street Journal and author of “Earning It: Hard-Won Lessons from Trailblazing Women at the Top of the Business World”, as well as led workshops on growing one’s personal brand. Their annual Leadership Summit took place in 2018 in partnership with the Diversity Council in October.

Empowerment of local students and individuals within diverse professional organizations is an outreach initiative of PBWIN. The organization has visited local primary and secondary schools to promote STEAM education. Partnerships with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) have created opportunities to teach students about Peterbilt and the trucking industry.

In addition to PBWIN, the Veterans’ Diversity Resource Group also works collaboratively with the Diversity Council to promote and support Peterbilt’s efforts to recognize and enhance diversity in its workforce. Founding this in 2018, the organization acts as a communal place for Peterbilt employees who are either veterans or veteran supporters.

“These diversity resource groups under the Diversity Council are important for our employees,” says Handt. “Providing individuals with access to organizations that represent them and their backgrounds gives them a sense of community and of belonging. Peterbilt prides itself on our low employee turnover rate. Letting individuals know they’re seen and belong here is part of our success.”
