UNT receives the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED)

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine recognized the University of North Texas as one of the “top colleges for diversity” in the U.S. with the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award for 2018. UNT will be featured in INSIGHT Into Diversity’s November 2018 HEED Awards issue along with 95 other award recipients. Lenore Pearlstein, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine editor, presented the HEED Award to President Neal Smatresk and Vice President Joanne Woodard on September 6.

Beyond the Surface: Examining Implicit Bias

The 2019 Equity & Diversity Conference will feature keynote speaker Howard J. Ross. Ross is a lifelong social justice advocate and considered one of the world's seminal thought leaders on identifying and addressing unconscious bias. He authored the Washington Post best seller, Everyday Bias: Identifying and Navigating Unconscious Judgments in Our Daily Lives (2014) and Reinventing Diversity: Transforming Organizational Community to Strengthen People, Purpose and Performance, (2011). His new book, Our Search for Belonging: How the Need for Connection is Tearing Our Culture Apart, will be published in 2018.

Campus Inclusion Climate Survey

The Division of Institutional Equity and Diversity is proud to announce its partnership with Honda of Denton for a chance to win a 2018 Honda Civic as a student incentive for completing the Campus Inclusion Climate Survey! This marks the Division’s efforts to create mutually beneficial strategic partnerships between UNT and companies that support diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Campus Inclusion Climate Survey will be distributed to all UNT Denton faculty, staff, students and administrators October 29 – November 16 and will serve as a blueprint for the Division’s future Strategic Plan for Diversity & Inclusion. Fall Ball: October 20

Join the Pride Alliance for the third annual Fall Ball! On October 20, 2018, from 7pm to 10pm the Pride Alliance in collaboration with University of North Texas student organizations will celebrate with a dance at the Greek Life Center. Often, homecoming celebrations in high schools explicitly or implicitly exclude Queer and Trans people.

At the University of North Texas Pride Alliance, we believe you should be able to celebrate homecoming in clothes that affirm your gender and attend in a group, with a date or dates of your choosing, or on your own without fear of violence or discrimination. Whether you’re a student now, or someone who didn’t get to have an equitable homecoming experience in the past, you’re welcome to join us at Fall Ball. Congratulations to Maria Garza, the 2018 recipient of the A. Tennyson Miller and Joe L. Atkins Scholarship.

“I was born in Guatemala, but moved to the U.S at the age of 3, and I've lived in Houston, Texas ever since. I chose to attend UNT because I believed it was far enough from home to grow as an individual but close enough to go home if I was to become homesick. Besides the distance from home, I chose to attend UNT because it seemed to have the environment I saw myself exceeding in. This scholarship to me is something I am very grateful because as a DACA student I do not receive any aid for school which makes it really difficult for my family to afford the cost of college. However, this scholarship is very helpful in my success in higher education and motivates me to keep working harder despite the obstacles in the way. I am very thankful of the generosity of the Miller Atkins Scholarship.”

Mediating Change Conference

Register now for the inaugural Mediating Change Conference November 1 - 2, 2018 in Denton, TX. The conference focuses on the roles of media in creating a more equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and just society. The event is hosted by the UNT Department of Media Arts and co-sponsored by the Division of Institutional Equity & Diversity.

Unlikely Allies in the Academy

During the summer of 2018, 40 faculty and staff members participated in Diversity & Inclusion’s “Unlikely Allies in the Academy” summer INTRAgroup dialogue series. A continuation of the series based upon the book Unlikely Allies in the Academy: Women of Color and White Women in Conversation edited by Karen Dace, the summer INTRAgroup sessions provided space for open, honest, and robust discussions encouraging participants to develop bonding capital among colleagues. This fall the series continues with INTERgroup sessions to develop bonding capital through productive and effective cross-racial and cross-cultural relationships. Diversity Training

On September 4th, Diversity & Inclusion provided their “Microaggressions and Inclusive Language” workshop to the members of North Texas Sweethearts, a student organization. This three-hour, interactive workshop explored the impact of language on organizational climate by connecting participants with their own microaggression experiences, and discussed how microaffirmations can facilitate student success. One participant commented, “I thought this [workshop] was very helpful and informative. I also think it should be required for students.” Diversity & Inclusion delivers learning and development opportunities such as these to both UNT students and employees.

Tent Talks

"Tent Talks" facilitates impromptu dialogue on Library Mall and Discovery Park, typically during the first Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the month. Using questions encouraging multiple perspectives, each day addresses a topic aligned with programming in the Division of Institutional Equity & Diversity. Topics discussed in September included:

1. What are advantages and disadvantages of heritage months?
2. Which term is more appropriate? Hispanic, Latinx, or Neither?
3. What makes a good mentor?

Diversity & Inclusion Webinar

Diversity & Inclusion delivered its first webinar on August 31 as part of UNT System Talent Management’s monthly series. Presented by UNT Director of Diversity & Inclusion Shani Barrax Moore and moderated by Talent Management’s Amanda Fisher, Cultural Humility and Inclusion: Seeing Ourselves to See Others introduces participants to cultural humility, intentional inclusion, and productive engagement with difference in a one-hour webinar.
